CANEY, KS
Clair "Ike" Gordon, 83, passed away quietly, on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at his Caney, Kansas home. Clair had a difficult struggle with cancer, but is now once again whole and complete in the presence of his Heavenly Father.
Clair Frank Gordon was born March 18, 1933, at rural Jefferson, Kansas, the fourth of four children born to Otho Lafayette Gordon and Alcie Eloise [[]Kurtz] Gordon. He was raised in the Jefferson area, attending schools in Dearing and in Coffeyville, Kansas, graduating from Coffeyville Field Kinley High School in 1951. He attended college at Coffeyville Community Junior College.
On May 4, 1952, he married Shirley Joan Jarvis at the First Christian Church in Coffeyville. Clair's early employment was with Coffeyville Rig & Reel (Parkersburg); Acton Manufacturing Co, Ark City, KS; Thomas Associates Cable Clamp Co, Coffeyville; an aircraft manufacturing facility in Tulsa, OK, supporting the war effort; and ultimately with Phillips Petroleum, Bartlesville, OK.
Clair and Joan raised their four children, Jim, Rick, Steve, and Susan in Caney, KS. The couple and family moved to Caney in 1956, when Clair became employed by Phillips Petroleum, Bartlesville, as a Computer Expediter. He retired from Phillips in 1992 after 36 years.
Over the years Clair was a member of First Christian Church, Caney, and most recently Town & Country Christian Church, Bartlesville, OK, where he was an Elder and Deacon. He was a member of the Caney Historical Society, CanKan Dreambuilders, and SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America). Wherever he worked or associated, a song wasn't far away. It was common to hear him whistling or singing a tune as he worked. Clair enjoyed hunting, golf, wood working, and in earlier years he played state championship industrial league softball and coached little league baseball. He even served for a year as Boy Scout leader for Troop 31 in Caney.
