"Grandpa Dan" was adored by all of his 10 grandchildren. He instilled the importance of having Jesus in their hearts and supported multiple church camp outings, bible studies, and Christian movie nights. Some of the children have already begun their musical journeys, much to their grandfather's delight. He really loved being "Grandpa" and could be easily convinced to purchase loud and noisy gifts for them to keep at their parents homes.
Dan was a graduate of Wichita Southeast High School, and a proud WSU Alumni of the class of 1980 with his degree in Music Education. Dan was a member of Kappa Kappi PSI and worked on the Band Staff while attending WSU. He could be found at any marching band event with trumpet in hand. Dan continued to be an avid Chiefs fan and an Alabama football fanatic throughout his life, recent seasons had been much more celebrated than those in past decades and Dan wore his Alabama hats proudly. "Roll Tide!"
Mr. Vernon was "Legend" amongst his massive student following that included the towns of Andale, Greensburg, Humboldt, West Elk, Thayer, Tescott, Bennington, and his town of retirement, Caney, KS. Dan actively directed and pushed his students from 1980 up until 2007 when he retired. Daily he was recognizable by former students and he enjoyed hearing successes from their lives.
The City of Caney became his hometown. Dan served on the City Council and was frequently known to have pleasant conversations while handling his day to day errands.
Dan volunteered his musical and singing talents through his local community and played often up until his passing.
