Gene was born on August 23, 1947 to Chester Arthur and Estaline Naomi (Hibbs) Nunneley in Caney, Kansas. He was the baby of his family, so he spent a lot of time with his mom. They resided on the family farm north of Tyro. He attended school and graduated from Wayside High School (Go Panthers) in 1965. He was involved in football and baseball.

He married Joye Orcutt Nunneley on September 6, 1968 and from that marriage they were blessed with three children, Ginger, Regina and Samuel.

Gene was self-employed his entire life. In 1969, he started and was the President of G & J Oil Company. He was also the VicePresident of G & J Well Service for several years. He was an oil and cattleman his entire life. He loved drilling wells and going to the sale to buy cattle. Gene was a loving Dad and Papa. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and always tried to attend their activities. He was able to attend three World Series to watch the Royals. He enjoyed the lake and always had a boat, but never learned to swim. Gene became a Christian when he was 17 years old. He raised his children in a Christian home and showed them the love of Jesus through grace and forgiveness. He was involved in an accident in July of 2019 and was truly a miracle from God.
