John Nunneley Sr.

September 14, 1937 — November 16, 2021

Caney

John Dewey Nunneley Sr., 84, of rural Caney, Kansas, returned to his Heavenly Father on November 16, 2021 unexpectedly at his home.

John was born on September 14, 1937 to Chester Arthur and Estaline Naomi (Hibbs) Nunneley on the Caney River near Elgin, Kansas.  He attended grade school at Spring Valley and graduated from Wayside High School in 1956.

He met the love of his life LaDonna Sue (Hicks) in 1957, west of Tyro in Ortin’s Cellar one night taking shelter from a tornado, it was love at first sight and they wed later that fall, November 17, 1957 at the Tyro Christian Church. In John’s own words, he said they “enjoyed dancing, prancing and romancing together.”  They eventually made their home at Spring Valley, Kansas 4 miles north of Tyro, Kansas.

John was blessed with a large loving family, one girl and four boys. Cindy Sue, John Dewey Jr (Doc), Jimmy Dean, Joe DeWayne, and JayDee.

John was an avid cattleman/rancher. He spent his life buying cattle all over the country. He loved going to rodeos, fishing and playing cards, but his passion was bull riding and bucking the bulls. John will be remembered for his generosity toward others. He loved the Lord and also loved his family and friends unconditionally. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them about life. In 1989, when his son Joe was 21, he was in a car accident south of Caney, John devoted his life to him as he would lay comatose for almost five years. In 1993 his youngest son, Jay Dee was also in a car wreck north of Tyro at the age 21, becoming a quadriplegic, John gave the next 21 years caring for JayDee endlessly.

He was a member of Southview Church of God, South Coffeyville, Oklahoma.

John is survived by his daughter Cindy, two sons John Jr (Doc) & Sharon, Jimmy & Jana, his brother Gene Nunneley, a brother and sister-in-law Charlie and Joyce Hicks, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Grandchildren, Joshua David, Joel Davis (Mikayla), Jessica (Larry), Jeremiah (Paige), Josiah, Benjamin, Simeon, Lydia, Jessica (Clint), Ashley (Matt) and Macy Estaline Marie. He was also blessed with five great grandchildren Logan, Tenzley, Hadlee, Mason and Jamie Davis.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years LaDonna, his parents Chester and Estaline Nunneley, two brothers Eugene and Sam, four sisters Mary Carper, Maretta Davis, Norma Hodges, and Marie Bennett. His two sons, Joe and JayDee Nunneley and his first-born grandson John Dewey Nunneley III.
