Ruth Dodson

Ruth Dodson, 88, of Caney, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016, at Sedan City Hospital, after a long and happy life.
Della Ruth Martin, was born March 26, 1928, in Long Beach, California, the fourth of four children to Delph Martin and Nellie [[][[]][[][[]]]Wood] Martin: Marjorie, Roberta, Roger, and Ruth. She was raised in California until the age of eight when her family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas. She attended schools in California and Coffeyville, graduating Field Kindley High School in 1945. She graduated Coffeyville Junior College in 1947 with a teaching degree, and taught public school for several years at Caney. Ruth married John R. Dodson in 1949 at the Caney United Methodist Church. The couple raised their three daughters, Susan, Patricia, and Rebecca, in the rural Niotaze area, where she was a full time mother, a farmer's wife, and home maker.
Beginning in her youth Ruth enjoyed singing in the church choir. She enjoyed sewing, writing children's stories (that regretfully were never published), and had a special love for reading to children. She will be best remembered for her active involvement in the Methodist Church as a choir member and director, Sunday school teacher, baker and cook, with turkey candy, cake baking and decorating her specialty.
Blessed to carry on Ruth's memory are her two daughters, Susan Dodson of Caney, and Rebecca (husband Terry) Holmes of Topeka; three grandchildren -Marcia McDaniel-Witt (husband Micah) of Vinita, OK, John (wife Jennifer) McDaniel, Caney, Misty Dodson, Wichita, Kansas; three great grandchildren, Chad, Tristan, and Tiffany; Son-n-Law Mark McDaniel, Caney; Sister Roberta Peterson, Seattle, WA; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband John (1991) , daughter Patricia (1991), granddaughter Jennifer Holmes (2000), brother Roger Martin, and sister Marjorie Casement.
Celebration of Life services are scheduled for 10:00 am, Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Potts Chapel Funeral Home, Caney, with Pastor Will Kenyon, Caney United Methodist Church officiating. The family will greet friends beginning at 9:00am just prior to the service. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Niotaze. Family has suggested memorials to the Caney United Methodist Church, designated in memory of Ruth Dodson. Online condolences can be shared at www.pottsfuneralhome.com.
